3 Tips to Make Your Rental Feel Like Home

Although you might love the convenience of renting, one thing that you might not love about most rentals is the fact that they often don’t feel very homey. Most landlords use very neutral colors when painting, remodeling and decorating their rental units, which is obviously understandable. However, this isn’t all that appealing, but there are ways that you can make your new rental as comfortable and homey as possible without breaking your lease. These are a few things that you can try.

  1. Use Rugs

First of all, if you’re looking for a great way to spruce up cold and boring tiles or plain carpet, consider throwing down throw rugs. They’re great for adding an instant splash of color and making your rental feel more like home, and you can take them with you when you leave. Plus, your rugs can help cover up and protect the flooring beneath, which can help you ensure that you get your deposit back.

  1. Cover the Walls — the Right Way

If the walls in your rental are plain white or otherwise neutral and boring, you could be thinking about painting. However, many leases prohibit renters from painting. Others require that you go back and re-paint at the end of your tenancy, which can be expensive and annoying.

Instead, consider alternatives for paint so that you don’t have to worry about a lease violation or a hassle. Large mirrors, paintings and photographs are all great options. You can also get creative and hang fabric on your walls for a burst of color.

  1. Bring in Greenery

There is something about house plants that can really make a house feel like a home. Consider bringing in a few nice house plants, and place some potted plants on your patio or on your balcony. Then, along with perking up your home, you can also make up for not having a garden.
